What is the Zink the Zebra program?
Once upon a time, a zebra
named Zink lived in the Lipis jungle with her mother, her
father, and her brother, Fink. Zink was a normal zebra in
every way. She had four legs, two ears, one nose, one
mouth, one tail...and spots. Because Zink has spots, she
is treated differently by other zebras.
The story of Zink the Zebra
was written by Kelly Weil, a girl who had cancer. This
insightful story tells not about the physical pain she
experienced, but rather describes the pain she felt at being
excluded. Using cancer as a metaphor for all
differences-racial, religious, or economic, real or
perceived-the program invites participants to discover ways in
which they are more alike than different.
This troop patch program is
designed to: give girls a sense of understanding and
appreciation for individual differences; develop girls' respect
for others; teach girls compromise; practice life-long skills of
dealing with people who are perceived to be different; and
provide an opportunity for community service.
